Updated: Apr 30, 2023

Characteristics and highlights of Kanzan Cherry

The Kanzan Cherry (scientific name: Cerasus serrulata 'Kanzan') is a type of cherry blossom known for its vibrant pink and large flowers. The numerous petals create a luxurious appearance, making it a popular choice for many people during the cherry blossom season. Kanzan is also a robust variety, resistant to pests, diseases, and environmental changes, making it suitable for gardens and parks.

Differences between Sakura Cherry Blossom and Kanzan

There are differences in appearance and flowering times between the iconic Sakura Cherry Blossom / Somei Yoshino cherry blossom (scientific name: Cerasus x yedoensis) and Kanzan Cherry. Sakura Cherry Blossom has simple, pale pink flowers and typically blooms from late March to early April. In contrast, Kanzan has darker pink flowers with many petals and blooms slightly later, from mid to late April.

Best time to see Kanzan on Ginza Sakura dori Street

Ginza Sakura dori Street, located at the northern end of Ginza, is lined with cherry trees, as its name suggests. During spring, the street attracts many tourists and locals alike. Kanzan, in particular, stands out among the cherry blossoms planted along the street. Its beautiful pink flowers create an urban oasis, with the best viewing time between mid to late April - perfect for a leisurely stroll or cherry blossom viewing.

Enjoying Kanzan with AR technology

You don't have to wait until next spring to enjoy Kanzan Cherry blossoms. Using the AR technology provided by the Ginza Biodiversity Museum, you can appreciate the beauty of Kanzan flowers anytime, anywhere. Through smartphones or tablets, the AR experience overlays the flowers onto the real world, making it feel as if you're looking at real cherry blossoms.
