Work to revise the JIS-specified safety colours had been ongoing in light of colour vision deficiencies and international trends, and the revised JIS standard was announced on 20 April.

The previous colour specifications, which used Munsell values and the like, were extremely difficult to apply in practice; however, the revised version adds CMYK and RGB specifications, making it far more user-friendly.
The six colours covered are red, yellow-red, yellow, green, blue, and red-purple. As the differences from the previous specifications are visually apparent, there is likely to be some degree of impact.
